Adoption Process

Adoption is a process. As required research into this breed, you MUST watch this video to adopt a field trial racing greyhound (a lurcher) from us:

“Introduction to the Lurcher (a field trial racing greyhound)”

AFTER you have watched the video above, submit your application. The $35 application fee should be sent at the same time as the Adoption Application. (If you are a previous adopter of ours, we do not need this fee.) The fee can be sent thru the “Send Money” website page. It is nonrefundable, so please understand our requirements stated below on this page.  This fee does NOT count towards your Adoption Fee, it is separate. We charge this fee because we value our volunteer’s time, which is our most precious resource. This fee reassures us that you have done your homework. It is nonrefundable if you are not approved, or if you withdraw your application.

The time to submit your written application is after you have determined that these are the dogs for you!  Do not wait until you think we have “the right hound” on our AVAILABLE list, or that dog will probably be adopted by someone else who is ahead of you in the approval process. We suggest that you get “pre-approved” BEFORE meeting the right hound. Then you can be ready in advance when the right hound becomes available.

Read all requirements on this page, watch our  video “Introduction to the Greyhound Lurcher”, submit an online application, and send your $35 application fee at the same time, so we can start the approval process. (Use the “Send Money” page on this website.) We will acknowledge receipt within 24-48 hours. A volunteer will reach out to schedule your Home Visit. This ensures that your home will be matched with the hound (of your choice) that is the best fit for your family.

There are some applications we cannot accept. If you are younger than 25, if the primary applicant is not financially independent or is a full-time student, if you live in a community house, dorm, or apartment building, if you have an electric or invisible fence, or if you want to obedience train your dog to enable you to walk him off leash in an unfenced area, we will quickly let you know these greyhounds are not the breed for you.  We require a fully fenced in yard. We have learned that these sighthounds deserve their own fenced yard. Unless you have adopted from Prison Greyhounds previously, our service area is: Indiana, western Ohio, northern Kentucky, eastern Illinois, and Nashville, TN. It just depends on the driving range of the volunteers that do the Home Visits. (Sorry, we cannot service Chicago, Illinois.)

We try to post every available hound, but often we can’t keep up!   The most frequent updates are posted on Facebook. Out of respect for our Foster Folks’ time, we do not ask them to communicate or meet with potential adopters until you have been completely screened (pre-approved).  We do not accept holds on dogs while you are still going through the approval process.

During your Home Visit, our volunteer will bring a hound along with them. We require everyone living at the residence, adult or child, to be present, as well as all pets. We also ask that BEFORE YOUR HOME VISIT, you must read our Adoption Handbook. This is how we can maximize the home visit to ensure a more successful adoption. You may download it here:

During your approval process, please be aware that we often have several people watching any one of our hounds.  We cannot (will not) tell you if there is another family interested in your desired hound.  That hound can be adopted by someone else at any time in the process prior to your approval.  We hate to disappoint, so we encourage everyone to get pre-approved as soon as you decide that this breed is for you!

Adoption Fee: Our adoption fees vary according to the type of greyhound you adopt.  The full fee is due as soon as you select a hound (after pre-approval).

  • Field Trial Greyhound (Lurcher) – $300
  • Hero Hound (retired blood donor) – $200
  • NGA purebred retired racing greyhound – $1000. Note that we ONLY adopt NGA greyhounds to those with previous NGA greyhound experience. We can explain the process of how we help you select an adoptable greyhound from Wheeling Island Adoption Kennel.

Adoption fees help to offset the expense of transport, spay/neuter, dental cleaning, heartworm/parasite meds, microchip and vaccinations. Each greyhound’s vetting schedule is unique as to how long after arrival they will require updates. Your greyhound will be kept current on parasite treatments and preventives from the day he arrives into our care. Upon adoption, hounds receive a new 1” wide matching martingale collar and 6-foot leash, first month of parasite meds, and plastic muzzle (unless you adopt a Hero Hound).  The adoption fee is nonrefundable, but fully transferable, if your hound proves to not be a good match for your house. After adoption, reach out to us if you need advice or coaching.  We are there for you. This is not just a monetary transaction. If for whatever reason it does not work out, you MUST return the greyhound to us.  We can help you find a hound who is better fit for your lifestyle and family. Everyone wants each hound to be happy in his forever home. We also want YOU to find the best match for your family.
